With just over a week until Halloween, it’s no surprise to see all kinds of stories being published about Halloween candy. There are articles all over the candies we love, the candies we hate, the favorite and least favorite candies from every state…yada, yada, yada.
Since I already know what I like (100 Grand bars, Snickers, Skittles) and what I hate (Candy Corn, Circus Peanuts, popcorn balls with cat hair on them), I thought it would be fun to look at the quantities.
In particular, the massive number of candies produced every day by some candy manufacturers, including right here in Illinois.
Tootsie Rolls probably aren’t the top candy on most of our favorites lists, but they’re still loved, and Tootsie Roll Industries Makes literally tons
And they make them right here in Illinois at 7401 S. Cicero Avenue in Chicago, where they’ve been making them since the company moved to Chicago in 1968.
According to Tootsie Rolls websitean average of 64 million Tootsie Rolls are produced every day. Taking those numbers and working outwards, we find that 64 million Tootsie Rolls a day means they’re knocked out:
- 44,440 every minute
- 740 per second
- 23 billion Tootsie Rolls per year
Think about it, this all only works for a kid to leave them in their Halloween candy bag while picking up some Skittles instead.
Speaking of Skittles, they produce a lot more products than Tootsie Rolls.
Not to say that Tootsie Rolls and their 64 million pieces a day aren’t impressive, it’s just that Skittles, according to their website, produces 200 million pieces per daywhich breaks down to 70 billion a year.
Here are some other candies, along with their production numbers:
Peeps produces 5.5 million a day, which equates to 2 billion every year.
Hershey’s kisses (so called because of the sound the machine that produces them makes) are thrown at a rate of 70 million a day, or 25.5 billion a year.
