There weren’t the downloads players were hoping for.
If you love Halo Infinite’s multiplayer, you’re probably thirsty for new content, the Forge Modeor even countryside cooperative. The game got off to a great start after multiplayer was scrapped last year and then again with the launch of its campaign. Sadly, it’s only gotten worse since then – starting with the broken progression system, then the lack of content. Constant lags mean players don’t have much to download – however, it looks like the game is downloading something quite large, but no one knows what.
As spotted by NicmeistaR on Twitter, each Halo Infinite match seems to use an unreasonably large amount of data – over 300MB, apparently. They job this revelation on Twitter, saying the game is absolutely messing with player networks and data caps. They also didn’t know if it was a bug. For comparison, NicmeistaR’s survey found that the average match should only use up to 11MB.
It looks like they weren’t the only ones, as the tweet received a response from HaloHubGG saying they’ve also observed that “the game is transferring a massive amount of data. One thing we do know is that they’re collecting additional diagnostic data right now, but surely that can’t be hundreds of MB per game, they would be out of their data storage costs.”
In a follow-up tweet, NicmeistaR noted that even just “relaxing in the menu” resulted in the use of up to 700MB of data. “Which is just crazy, I would understand if they do that in flight but in retail? You can’t do that to people playing on capped data (I don’t) but damn that’s almost a game,” they continued.
However, there could be answer to this, but this has yet to be confirmed by 343 Industries. Apparently the game is downloading the season 2 banner image up to 1000-2000 times for some reason. It seems to stop when you’re in a match, but once again resumes when you’re in the lobby or even in the general menu. 343 business sectors is conscious of the problem and work to solve it.
