Brad Pitt believes ex Angelina Jolie is trying to hurt him by going public with details of the 2016 altercation that led to their divorce, a source close to Pitt has told PEOPLE.
PEOPLE obtained the FBI’s redacted report that Jolie anonymously submitted a Freedom of Information Act request earlier this year. In the documents, the actress alleged to authorities that an inebriated Pitt was threatening to her and their six children during the Sept. 14, 2016, flight from France to Los Angeles. The investigation concluded in November and no charges were laid.
A source close to Pitt says he and Jolie have had the documents in question for six years, and Jolie likely wanted to “resurrect a painful issue for everyone that was resolved six years ago.”
“They investigated. They prepared documents, reviewed them together and decided not to charge him,” the source said.

“What are a person’s motivations for taking the court’s time and public resources by filing an anonymous FOIA request for material they have had for years? Jolie had alleged to the FBI that Pitt grabbed, pushed and yelled at her on the plane, scaring her and their children with his behavior. Both parties reported injuries and she claimed $25,000 in damage was done to the private jet.
According to Pitt’s source, “This is not a factual document. This is what she claims happened. It has been investigated and no charges have been laid. This is the standard for this stuff not to be disclosed.”

Pitt and Jolie were declared legally single by a judge in 2019. They are parents to Maddox, 21, Pax, 18, Zahara, 17, Shiloh, 16, and 14-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. Their custody battle is ongoing.
The source adds that Pitt is “generally in a good frame of mind given the frustrations of these circumstances.”
“It’s wave after wave of attempts to hurt her,” the source explains. “He’s been pretty much completely silent except to acknowledge the things he could do better. He’s been silent on this issue because he knows it’s the best thing for his children, which is best for everything. the world.
